Applies to: Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED and Switch Lite. Switch 2 is not covered.
Work through the checks
Identify the controller and connection
Record whether you are testing Joy-Con, a Pro Controller, or the built-in controls on a Lite. Note wireless and attached behaviour separately where supported.
Check charging conditions
Use the correct compatible charging method. Attached Joy-Con charging depends on the console’s power state; follow Nintendo’s linked power guide.
Make a useful comparison
If available, compare another compatible controller or supported charging method. A controller-specific result is more useful than an untested assumption about the console.
Use the correct support path
Switch Lite’s built-in controls cannot be removed and reattached like Joy-Con. Use Nintendo support for the control type and record continued failures for service.
What to record
- Whether the controller powers on and charges
- Wired versus wireless results, where supported
- Whether a second compatible controller behaves differently
What the result can tell you
A working comparison controller points towards the first controller or its setup. If both fail, investigate the shared cable, console, and connection conditions before attributing a component fault.
Stop using a controller with a swollen battery, liquid damage, or unusual heat. Do not continue charging it to see whether the symptom clears.
Parts and repair options
Use these as candidates to test. Match the exact hardware revision before ordering a replacement.
Joystick assembly
Drift persists across software after applicable reset/calibration. Compare the neutral input and a second controller; record the affected axis. Match the exact controller revision. Many DualSense/Xbox stick repairs require soldering and calibration.
Battery or battery contacts
Operation is stable wired but fails on battery power. Verify the cable, battery type/charge and any supported replaceable batteries. Replace only the isolated power component. Do not treat all wireless failures as a battery fault.
USB connector / controller connection path
Known-good data cables do not work, or the connector is damaged. Compare another controller with the same cable and console port. Request connector and board inspection before purchasing a controller PCB.
