Nintendo Switch no signal or black screen

“No signal”, a black image, and a flickering picture are different observations. Note what the display reports and whether the console appears to stay powered.

Applies to: Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED and Switch Lite. Switch 2 is not covered.

Work through the checks

  1. Identify the affected screen

Record whether the problem affects the handheld screen, TV output, or both. Switch Lite has no TV mode and should not enter dock troubleshooting.

  2. Check power before the image path

Sound or a charging response can help separate a blank screen from no power. Follow Nintendo’s model-specific blank-screen procedure when unresponsive.

  3. For TV mode, compare external equipment

Use a compatible Nintendo dock and power adapter, the correct TV input, and a known-good HDMI cable. Do not use dock tests for Switch Lite.

  4. Keep the comparison for repair

If handheld and TV results differ, include both in your report. The comparison narrows the path but does not confirm a particular screen, connector, or board component.

What to record

  • The message shown by the TV or monitor
  • Whether another display and cable were tested
  • Whether the fault changes when accessories are bypassed

What the result can tell you

If changing one external item restores the picture, repeat the comparison to establish a reliable pattern. That is stronger evidence than buying a port or board based on a single blank screen.

When to stop

Stop reconnecting a visibly damaged or loose port. Do not force a plug, insert metal tools, or assume that a board-level video fault has been confirmed.

Parts and repair options

Use these as candidates to test. Match the exact hardware revision before ordering a replacement.

LCD / backlight or display connection

Handheld remains blank while other evidence shows the console is running. Compare handheld behaviour with supported TV mode. A repairer should inspect connections and the display supply path. Match the exact Switch revision; do not buy an OLED panel for an LCD model.

Compatible dock or dock power adapter

Handheld works but TV mode fails. Test a known-good complete dock/adapter/HDMI setup before replacing console parts. Replace the external item that the comparison isolates.

USB-C port or charging/display-path circuitry

Physical damage or persistent failure with correct external equipment. Have a technician inspect the connector and perform model-specific electrical tests. A soldered port requires specialist repair; a symptom alone does not identify a charging IC.
